Why do the GGR Touring Cars use a fuel filter before the pump? If I run my high boost Escort Cosworth using the standard fuel pump, what symptoms will I notice? My Escort Cosworth is fitted with a GGRFPK pump, when the tank is very low on fuel I suffer fuel surge when cornering, why is this? Why do you recommend a higher capacity fuel pump on 8 injector Sierra conversions?
Ford have used the same fuel pump on both the two, and four wheel drive Sierra Cosworth cars. It is externally mounted, and placed below the fuel tank as this type of pump requires to be gravity fed. This pump has sufficient extra capacity to supply the fuel delivery requirements of most engine conversions. If a higher capacity fuel pump is required, GGR carry a range of higher flow rate pumps in stock.
Is it possible to fit a fuel pump with too high a flow rate?
No. The fuel pump runs at maximum capacity at all times, supplying fuel to the engine. At the engine, the fuel enters a pressure regulator, and this returns any excess fuel that is not required back to the fuel tank.
Why is it essential to fit the Sierra Cosworth type pump below the fuel tank?
The type of pump used on the Sierra Cosworth should be gravity fed, as it will not create a vacuum. This means that it is unable to lift fuel up out of the tank. It is possible to mount this type of pump above the fuel level, but if this is the case, it must be fed by an additional lift pump.
Why do the GGR Touring Cars use a fuel filter before the pump?
It has become standard practice to fit a filter prior to the high pressure fuel pump on racing cars. The mechanism of the high pressure pumps is very delicate and is easily damaged by debris entering the pump.
If I run my high boost Escort Cosworth using the standard fuel pump, what symptoms will I notice?
Unfortunately, when you notice the first symptoms, the damage may already be done! At higher engine speeds and full boost, due to insufficient fuel supply, the engine will run weak. This weak mixture can cause internal overheating, detonation, and a hole in a piston. So the first symptoms noticed will be excessive oil smoke from the exhaust.
The fuel pump that we use in our conversions uses its complete base area as an inlet to pick up fuel, and it will do this efficiently whilst the complete area is covered with fuel. If the fuel level is low enough to allow part of the inlet into fresh air, the pump will draw air & not fuel. A similar situation to when you try to remove the last few drops of a drink from a glass using a drinking straw.
Why do you recommend a higher capacity fuel pump on 8 injector Sierra conversions?
On this type of conversion, we often use 8 injectors with an even higher fuel flow rate than the standard items. With a fuel delivery requirement above double of the original vehicle, the standard pump capacity is not sufficient.
