Back to Power Conversions SMALL TURBO ESCORT COSWORTH POWER CONVERSION The final Cosworth model (so far!) is the Small Turbo Escort Cosworth, which became available during the summer of 1994. As explained earlier, the original Escort Cosworth was designed as a basis for a Group A rally car and the vehicle specification reflected this. Once 2500 cars were produced to this specification, the features of the car were re examined, and a new model was designed, purely as a road car. Many of the (supposed) shortcomings of the original model were addressed, and a vehicle was produced that was thought to be more complete in its original specification, but unfortunately had significantly less tuning potential. One of the main criticisms of the original model Escort Cosworth, was the level of lag induced by the large turbo in standard form. This was caused by the large turbocharger specified by the engineers for their rally car. Many of the other special parts that were fitted specifically with motorsport in mind, (water injection, & water-cooled intercooler for example), were also deleted from the specification. One or two other small detail modifications were also made.
The most significant alterations as far as tuning are concerned, are the smaller sized turbo, and the use of Fords own (& hard to modify!) EECIV engine management system.
In spite of this, we have still managed to develop two extremely impressive conversions for this car, without replacing either the turbo, or the engine management system.
As with the large turbo model, power increases require modifications to the fuel supply, exhaust system, and engine management system calibration.
The EECIV management system does include a type of eprom that contains the usual fuel, ignition, and boost control parameters, but this is a unique type of eprom, and unavailable outside of The Ford Motor Company. To enable our own calibrations to be utilised, we connect an additional circuit board (& eprom) to a serial connection, in the back of the engine management system. This will then allow our new data to override the information carried within the existing EECIV memory. To ensure the security of our information, the circuit board & eprom are encapsulated inside a carbon fibre container, and the information on the eprom is encrypted. 275 BHP CONVERSION - CARBON FIBRE ELECTRONIC CAPSULE AND DE CATALYSED EXHAUST DOWNPIPE. Our first level of conversion for this model was developed to increase the power of the engine, whilst retaining a low cost. The fuel pump fitted to the Escort Cosworth has a relatively low supply capacity, and this conversion is calibrated to ensure that fuelling requirements are within this. The new fuel, ignition and boost control parameters contained within our carbon fibre engine management capsule give increased response, and improved power delivery, without compromising on the reliability of the car. The first catalyst is removed from the exhaust system to prevent disintegration of the catalysed element, which would block the remaining exhaust system. Retaining the centre catalysts does ensure that this conversion will still meet all current DOT emissions test regulations. 305 BHP CONVERSION - CARBON FIBRE ELECTRONIC CAPSULE, DE CATALYSED EXHAUST DOWNPIPE, HIGH FLOW FUEL PUMP, REPLACEMENT FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. As explained above, the first conversion was created to increase power, at minimum cost. This second conversion was created to exploit the maximum power capabilities of this engine, without compromising on reliability. To supply sufficient fuel to the engine we use the same replacement high flow in tank fuel pump fitted to our large turbo conversions, and a special fuel pressure regulator. The catalysed exhaust downpipe is again substituted for a de catalysed version, and a new carbon fibre electronic capsule is connected to the EECIV management system, containing our new settings for fuel, ignition, and closed loop boost control. (If desired, our 3" catalysed exhaust system and cone & trumpet air filter can be fitted in conjunction with this conversion to add further enhancements).
This conversion produces the level of power & response that is expected of an Escort Cosworth. Again, our intensive development of this conversion, and our control of the engine management system will ensure that cars fitted with this conversion will pass all current DOT exhaust emissions regulations.
We do have a demonstration car available (M 66 CAR) fitted with our 305 BHP conversion, and test drives can be arranged if required.
